Best tip to your ride: always follow the N247 road
Sintra is a jewel set between the mountains and the sea, waiting to be discovered by all who dare lose themselves in its majestic historical heritage, luxuriant nature, cosmopolitan cultural offer and opulent gastronomy. Sintra truly is the capital of Romanticism. It is a place to experience! All the coast of Sintra is well known thanks to its beaches located between cliffs which are not yet over-populated.
The romantic atmosphere can be sensed in one of its most important villages, Colares. When you arrive in Colares turn right towards Praia das Maçãs, a small village and that is greatly appreciated. At the exit take the crossing to the right where the road leads to Praia Grande: a vast sand beach very popular with surfers. On the cliffs that surround it there are dinosaur foot prints.
You then follow the directions to Azenhas do Mar where part of the houses are situated on the cliffs; the view from the rocks is splendid.
In Colares you can also go to Cabo da Roca (10 km). Cabo da Roca is the most Western point of the European continent. The site has a monument with the sign in Portuguese language "Here...Where the land ends and the sea begins..." (from Portuguese poet Camões).
The road is rather sinuous but very pretty and The view from the road is splendid. You go down to Malveira da Serra - a small village on the southern slope of the mountain - from there you go to: Guincho, Cascais. The beach of Guincho is vast and sandy and rather windy, so a must for surfers and very popular in the summer. Then one continues on the seafront. At the entrance to Cascais one passes the "Mouth of Hell", an excavation in the cliffs where the sea comes in making an astonishing noise.
After approximately 2 km, you arrive in center of Cascais. Cascais was a fishermen's village which became the summer residence for the Portuguese royal family at the end of the 19th century.
